Earthborn is a proper British brand, made right here in the UK. They've built their whole reputation on being the eco-conscious option — breathable claypaint, low-VOC formulas, no acrylics or oils in the core emulsion, and they were one of the first paint brands in the UK to carry the EU Ecolabel. So if you're after British-made paint with genuine environmental credentials, Earthborn is one of the most honest options out there.
What makes them stand out isn't just the provenance, it's the breathability. Their Claypaint is genuinely vapour-open, which makes it a cracking choice for older homes with lime plaster, cob, or solid walls that need to breathe. Slap a plasticky modern emulsion over breathable substrates and you can trap moisture; Earthborn lets the wall do its thing.
The palette has a soft, chalky, almost matt quality that photographs beautifully. FiniSpec carries 85 Earthborn colours, with the whites being their strongest family — 28 of them. White Clay is the quintessential Earthborn off-white: warm, gentle, never clinical. For something with a bit more character, Flutterby is a lovely soft putty-ish neutral, and Sandy Castle brings a warmer, sandy earthiness that suits cottages and country kitchens.
The one thing to know before you commit: Earthborn's Claypaint has an ultra-matt, slightly textured finish that's wonderful on walls but not built for heavy scrubbing. If you've got grubby-handed kids or a busy hallway, look at their Eggshell or Lifestyle range, which are tougher and more wipeable. Don't expect a chalk-flat claypaint to survive a Brillo pad — that's not what it's for.
Practical advice: order samples and live with them for a few days, because the matt clay finish reads quite differently to a standard emulsion under changing light. And if you're painting fresh lime plaster, let it cure properly first — Earthborn will breathe with it, but you still want the substrate stable.
