Crown is a proper British paint brand, made in Darwen, Lancashire, where it's been produced since the 19th century. The company started life as Walpamur and has been a fixture of the North West for generations. These days it's owned by the Danish Hempel Group, but the manufacturing stays put in Lancashire — so when you buy a tin of Crown, you're buying paint made in Britain.
That matters more than people think. Crown is one of the genuine UK manufacturers rather than a brand that gets blended and tinned abroad, and the Darwen site does a serious amount of R&D and trade-facing work. It's why Crown is so common on building sites and in the merchants — it's reliable, well-priced, and the coverage is honest.
In FiniSpec's library Crown runs to 193 colours, with its strongest showing in neutrals (33), greys (32) and whites (27). The whites are where Crown really earns its keep on a contract job. Crown::Pure Brilliant White is the workhorse — the bog-standard bright white you'll find on miles of skirting and ceilings up and down the country — while Crown::Bright White gives you a cleaner, crisper take if Pure Brilliant feels a touch creamy for the room. For something with more character, Crown::Woodland Wanderer is a lovely soft green-grey that holds up nicely in living spaces and hallways.
The "but is it as good as Farrow & Ball" question always comes up. Honest answer: Crown's pigment depth and finish quality don't match the premium brands at close range, but for ceilings, trade work, kids' rooms and anywhere you're covering big areas on a budget, it's a cracking value choice.
