What is Little Greene Intelligent paint and where should I use it?

Quick answer

Intelligent is Little Greene's range of hard-wearing, washable, water-based paints for areas that need to take a bit of punishment — kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and woodwork. It's their performance line, distinct from their standard absorbent matt emulsion.

Little Greene splits its paint into two camps, and knowing the difference saves you grief.

Their standard Absorbent Matt Emulsion is a beautiful, chalky, deeply pigmented finish — but it's exactly that, absorbent. Lovely on living room and bedroom walls where nobody's scrubbing fingerprints off. The Intelligent range is the opposite: a tougher, water-based, wipeable family built for real-world abuse.

The Intelligent line includes several finishes:

The headline benefit is washability and durability without sacrificing colour. You get the full Little Greene palette — the soft, complex greens and the rich heritage tones — in a finish you can live with in a busy house.

So where do you actually use it? Anywhere that takes traffic or moisture. Intelligent Matt on hallway walls and stairwells. Intelligent Matt or Eggshell in bathrooms (it handles steam and the odd splash). Kitchen walls. Skirtings and doors in Intelligent Eggshell — that's the workhorse for trim.

Greens like Little Greene::French Grey or a deeper Little Greene::Mid Azure Green look cracking in a hallway, and in Intelligent Matt they'll survive the school run.

The "but what about my lounge?" question: for low-traffic walls you don't need Intelligent — the standard Absorbent Matt gives a flatter, richer chalkiness that's hard to beat. Save Intelligent for where it earns its keep.

Practical tip: don't over-wipe Intelligent Matt in the first couple of weeks. Like all emulsions it needs roughly four weeks to fully cure before it's at peak scrubbability.
