Natural Calico is one of those gentle, warm Dulux neutrals that behaves beautifully as long as you don't fight its undertone. The golden rule: keep everything warm. Cool whites, crisp greys or icy blues alongside it will make the walls read dirty rather than soft.
Start with your woodwork. Don't reach for brilliant white — it'll fight the wall and leave the Calico looking grubby by comparison. A slightly richer warm white like Dulux White Cotton sits just below the wall tone and lets the whole scheme breathe. That tonal step-down is the trick: low contrast, all in the same warm family.
For a bit of life, layer soft sage greens or faded terracotta into your soft furnishings and accents. Almost Pistachio (LRV 80.3) is a lovely whisper of green that keeps the airy, light feel if you want a paler companion wall — it's gentle enough not to break the calm. If you want proper grounding and contrast, go deep rather than bright: Paint & Paper Library Blue Blood (LRV 16.4) or Mylands Cigar BH.20 (LRV 11.8) make cracking accent colours on a single feature wall, joinery or a cosy snug, picking up the warmth in the Calico while adding weight.
The "but what about" question I always get: can I do a high-contrast, monochrome look with this? Honestly, no — Natural Calico isn't built for it. Pair it with charcoal or black and the warmth curdles. It wants soft, tonal schemes, not drama.
And the metals: brass, copper and aged bronze every time. Chrome and brushed nickel will look cold and out of place. Get the warm metals, a warm white trim and a touch of sage or terracotta in, and you've got a properly inviting, easy-to-live-with room sorted.
