Donkey Ride is one of Earthborn's lovely grounded, dusky clay tones — the sort of colour that feels like it's always been on the wall. To get the best from it you need to lean into its warmth rather than fight it.
Woodwork first. Never go brilliant white against Donkey Ride — it'll drag a tinge of dirt out of the colour and make the whole scheme look tired. You want a soft, warm off-white instead. Earthborn's own off-whites are a natural fit, and any creamy, slightly buttery white will sit beautifully alongside.
For a gentle, optimistic pairing, Dulux Almost Pistachio (LRV 80.3) is a cracking choice. It's a pale, fresh green-white that lifts Donkey Ride's earthiness and brings a bit of light into the room without going cold. Use it on adjoining walls, a ceiling, or in a connecting hallway.
When you want depth and drama, go the other way. Paint & Paper Library Blue Blood (LRV 16.4) is a deep, inky blue that throws Donkey Ride forward — think a feature wall, an alcove, or joinery. And Mylands Cigar BH.20 (LRV 11.8) is a rich, smoky brown that pulls out the clay in Donkey Ride and gives you that layered, lived-in feel. Either makes a brilliant anchor.
Beyond paint, layer in faded terracotta, mossy greens and clay browns through textiles, rugs and pottery — Donkey Ride loves company in its own tonal family.
On metals: keep them all warm. Aged brass, antique bronze, unlacquered copper. Chrome and polished nickel will look like they've wandered in from another scheme entirely.
Practical tip — Donkey Ride shifts a fair bit with light, looking softer and pinker in cooler north-facing rooms and properly earthy where it gets warm afternoon sun. Always paint a decent test patch and live with it for a couple of days before committing the whole room.
