Edward Bulmer is the genuine article when it comes to natural paint, mate — not a marketing exercise. Where most "eco" emulsions are still acrylic (plastic) with a low-VOC badge slapped on, Bulmer's paints are built from plant-based and mineral ingredients: natural binders, earth and mineral pigments, plant oils and chalk. No acrylic co-polymers, no petrochemicals, no titanium dioxide in the usual industrial sense. It's about as close to a traditional, honest paint as you'll find on the market.
The practical upshot is breathability. Because there's no plastic film sitting on the surface, these paints let moisture move through the wall — which makes them a cracking choice for older, solid-walled and lime-plastered properties where trapping damp behind a plastic emulsion causes real grief. They're also fully biodegradable and the tins are recyclable, so the whole lifecycle stacks up, not just the can.
Colour-wise, the range leans into soft, historic, slightly chalky tones that suit period interiors. Silver White and Milk White are lovely gentle off-whites with warmth rather than the clinical brilliant-white look, and Jonquil brings a soft, sunny note if you want a bit of character. The pigments being earth- and mineral-based gives the colours a depth and a way of shifting with the light that synthetic paints rarely match.
The honest "but what about" question: it's not the toughest, wipe-clean finish going. Natural binders don't scrub like an acrylic kitchen-and-bathroom paint, so for high-traffic hallways with grubby-fingered kids you may prefer something more robust, or accept it'll mark more easily. Coverage and drying can also feel different from mainstream emulsion, so don't rush it.
My advice: use Edward Bulmer where its strengths matter — breathable walls in older homes, bedrooms, sitting rooms, anywhere you value the eco credentials and the chalky depth of colour. Prime properly on tricky substrates, give it the full drying time between coats, and you'll get a beautiful, breathable, genuinely low-impact finish.
