Crown sits firmly in the value-for-money camp, and that's no insult, mate. It's one of the few proper British paint brands that delivers consistent coverage and a reliable finish without the premium price tag. For most everyday jobs, it does exactly what you need it to do.
Where Crown genuinely shines is whites and neutrals. Crown::Pure Brilliant White is one of the most-used ceiling and trim whites in the country for good reason — it goes on easily, dries clean and bright, and you can pick it up anywhere. If you want a touch less glare, Crown::Bright White is a sensible alternative. The neutral and grey families are strong too (33 neutrals and 32 greys in FiniSpec), so you've got plenty to play with for a calm, liveable scheme. For something with a bit more character, Crown::Woodland Wanderer is a lovely muted green-grey that punches above its price.
Now the honest bit. Crown's pigment depth and surface finish don't match the heavy hitters. Stand a Crown grey next to a Farrow & Ball Mole's Breath or a Mylands neutral in changing light, and the more expensive paints have a richness and a way of shifting through the day that Crown simply doesn't replicate. The matt emulsions can also be a little less wipeable than premium ranges, so for high-traffic spaces I'd reach for their more durable lines or step up a brand.
So here's my advice: use Crown where it makes financial sense — ceilings, hallways, rentals, kids' rooms, anywhere you're covering a lot of square metres on a budget. Save the F&B and Little Greene money for the feature walls and rooms you'll really look at. Buy a tester first regardless of brand, paint two coats on a bit of lining paper, and live with it for a few days before committing. Crown's a workhorse — treat it like one and you'll be sorted.
